Here are a few "Rules of the Track" for all participants, parents, and even coaches to study and practice:
-
ON-TIME DELIVERY – Practices begin with a warm-up run around the track, stretching, and, hopefully, guest speakers on Thursdays. Runners should arrive by 5:30, and MUST be picked up by 6:30 p.m. Runners arriving late should not be merely dropped off at the track, as groups may often be on workouts away from the track facility;
-
A RUNNING CONCERN -- The CC Pacers is a running club. We understand that many Pacers will be adjusting to running workouts on the track, on campus sidewalks, or running on trails, and many will get into better shape in due time. As they are able, however, Pacers must be able to run at the group’s pace. Walking or dawdling disrupts the group workout. Workouts are beginner-friendly but gradually intensify over the course of the season. If a runner is having a hard time keeping up with his / her group, please speak to a coach. Conversely, if a runner is intentionally walking or dawdling for attention, coaches will speak to the runner’s parent;
-
GROUP THERAPY -- Once Pacers are grouped together for workouts, runners should stay with their coaches until their coaches dismiss them or place them under the watchful eye of another coach;
-
LIFE IN THE FAST LANES -- Faster runners have the right of way on the track—generally speaking—and that means the inside lanes in any given drill. If anyone needs to move out of the way of a runner, they should move to their right—that is, to an outside lane. Unless the track is not being used by other campus and extra-campus groups or clubs, the Pacers will usually use outside lanes. Further, neither runners nor coaches should ever step out onto the track surface or on other official areas (i.e., long jump runways, etc.) without looking both ways. Remember the pedestrians' credo: "Stop, look, and listen;"
-
HORSEPOWER, NOT HORSEPLAY -- Over the past years, we've seen children climbing the fences, riding the hurdle carts, wrestling in long jump pits, playing catch with water bottles, and bouncing on the high jump and pole vault pits. We are fortunate guests on UNC’s track. Please remind your children that the track is a place for fun, but not horseplay;
-
“LOTS” TO THINK ABOUT – Traffic will be heavy in the lower law school parking area as practice begins and ends. Pacers should stay out of the parking lot unless they’re getting out of or into a car or being escorted away from the track on a run by coaches. That said, motorists should watch for children (and adults!) darting out into traffic. No runners should cross ANY campus roadway unless directly under the supervision of a coach.
-
KEEP IT CLEAN – We are fortunate guests on UNC’s Track and UNC’s campus. Please help us to leave the track area better and cleaner than we’ve found it. Pacers and their parents should stay off UNC equipment unless under the supervision of a Pacers coach and remain out of the adjacent Eddie Smith Field House unless escorted by a coach or UNC official.
